Last week, well-known photographer and filmmaker Phil Borges visited Redmond High School (RHS) to speak to about 100 students in the Performing Arts Center.

Borges is an international TED (technology, entertainment, design) speaker and has photographed the Dalai Lama, worked for Amnesty International, National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, among many others. He uses his camera to highlight issues of social justice around the world.

“My students were so inspired by him, it was incredible. He spoke about his travels to indigenous cultures, his journey to become one of the top portrait photographers in the world and talked to students about the importance of doing what they love,” said photo teacher Jordan Swain. “Photography has become very popular as an art class at RHS. Students are able to communicate visually in a way that is accessible to everyone.”

This month, four of Swain’s students (Alyssa Foster, Niva Ashkenazi, Sydney Santostefano and Hanna Huntington) won recognition in the Congressional Art Competition (hosted at VALA by Congresswoman Suzan DelBene) and will have their art hanging in her office for a year.  Three of those students are photographers.
