Defending state champion Jake Imam and his doubles partner, Jamie Meyer, blasted through the field at the 1B/2B/1A state tennis tournament in Yakima last weekend. But the injury bug bit the team hard in the finals as they fell 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to Stanley Peterson and Chris Gugliuzza of Charles Wright Academy.
Jake Imam’s back injury, which caused him to miss the early part of the regular season, flared up in the final but he was able to continue. To make matters worse, in the third set, Meyer took a tennis ball to the chest and tripped backward, hitting his head on the court before finishing out the match.
In earlier rounds, the pair only gave up seven games while winning 36, in victories of 6-0, 6-1; 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-0.
Meyer, a senior basketball star for the Grizzlies, began playing tennis just last year.
