CHOMP! bites into farming, food and sustainability Aug. 20 at Marymoor Park

Eat Well. Live Well. King County.

Eat Well. Live Well. King County.

That’s the tagline for CHOMP!, the area’s celebration of local farming, food and sustainability, which is set for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 20 at Marymoor Park.

Now in its second year, this free family-friendly event is presented by PCC Natural Markets and hosted by King County Parks.

The all-day event will feature cooking demonstrations from guest celebrity chefs, hands-on workshops to make attendees better backyard farmers and gardeners, kids’ activities, a community gardener competition, live entertainment and more.

CHOMP! supports King County Executive Dow Constantine’s Local Food Initiative by celebrating local farmers, chefs and restaurants using locally-sourced food, and local organizations specializing in healthy food, sustainability, and social justice.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening the local food economy and improving access to healthy, affordable food in underserved communities.

This year, CHOMP! celebrates King County’s community gardeners and cooks with three fun and creative competitions:

Wacky Produce – Attendees can bring their spectacularly odd King County fruits and vegetables for a panel of local farmers to judge in three categories:

• Largest fruit or vegetable

• Fruit or vegetable that looks most like a human face

• Fruit or vegetable that looks most like an object or animal

Homemade Hot Sauce – CHOMP! judges will choose winners in three categories including:

• Hottest

• Most flavorful

• Overall top-rated by judges
