Red-light cameras only create more traffic

I’ve been reading with interest all the letters regarding the traffic cameras in Redmond. I think one resident nailed it recently when he noted that the cameras are actually backing up traffic, particularly at Avondale and Union Hill Roads. Every time I’m there, it seems, cameras are flashing constantly, even when drivers are making perfectly legal right turns on red.

I think one resident nailed it recently when he noted that the cameras are actually backing up traffic, particularly at Avondale and Union Hill Roads.  Every time I’m there, it seems, cameras are flashing constantly, even when drivers are making perfectly legal right turns on red.

Now, as a result of the cameras, drivers are just sitting and waiting for the green light, afraid that if they do make a legal turn on red, they’re going to get hit with a $124 fine. That is an exorbitant amount of money at a time when food and gas prices are going through the roof.

The state just spent a huge amount of money to widen the entrance onto State Route 520 in Redmond to improve traffic flow and now the cameras are backing traffic up.

And please, let’s stop calling these things “safety” cameras. With the possible exception of a school zone, the only purpose of these cameras is to generate revenue. I haven’t seen a lot of information from local governments or police about the high amount of accidents at these intersections.

Safety, schmafty. These are revenue cameras. Pure and simple.
