Students to perform classic operetta

The Evergreen Junior High School PTSA, in cooperation with Redmond’s SecondStory Repertory, presents “The Pirates of Penzance, Jr.” Thursday-Saturday, March 19-21 at the Redmond High School Performing Arts Center, 17272 NE 104th St. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. each night, with a Saturday matinee at 2:30 p.m. on the 21st.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic operetta has been slightly abbreviated and adapted for young performers — that’s the reason for the reference to “junior” in the title. The story takes place in the 1800s and tells the tale of Frederick, a pirate apprentice who leaves his life of crime and encounters Mabel, the daughter of a very British Major-General.

PTSA volunteer Vicky Broback, who co-produced the show with Judy Russo and Gretchen Loschen, said the show was chosen because “it’s fun and funny.”

Through funding from the PTSA, SecondStory Repertory has provided the talents of director/choreographer Kelly Wills and Lyndee White as musical director. Their professional expertise has enabled the cast of 32 members to learn specialized skills such as theatrical combat for the pirates and police officers and theatrical dance, based on ballet, for the lovely maidens.

“We really love SecondStory Repertory and love the idea of keeping this all in the community,” said Broback. “I also want to mention our 11-member production crew. It’s important for us to involve kids in different ways — kids who want to be involved but don’t want to be onstage.”

Those students and other parents have created posters and flyers, collected props and costume materials and at the shows, will take tickets, hand out programs, sell concessions and flowers.

At a rehearsal on Wednesday, students also made “Star Grams,” congratulatory messages that families and friends of performers can buy as a fundraising tool.

Two ninth grade stage managers are directly involved in the production. Megan Cote will run the show from backstage and Tina Joehnk will call the show (lights, sounds, music, curtain, etc.) from the booth.

Broback also thanked Misty Doty and Ruth Barton of Redmond High School’s theatre arts department for their help with costumes and technical support.

Tickets for “The Pirates of Penzance, Jr.” are $8 for adults, $6 for students and seniors. They’re available at the door of the Performing Arts Center or at Evergreen Junior High, 6900 208th Ave. NE. For information, call (425) 885-3896.
