The joy of graduation: The Bear Creek School awards 47 high school diplomas

The Bear Creek School's 10th commencement exercises took place Saturday June 12 in the Cornerstone Theater at the Bear Creek campus in Redmond.

The Bear Creek School’s 10th commencement exercises took place Saturday, June 12 in the Cornerstone Theater at the Bear Creek campus in Redmond.

Forty seven students were awarded high school diplomas by Upper School Division Head Karen Beman, Head of School Patrick Carruth and Kurt Maass, who is president of the board of trustees.

Twenty seven of the graduates were conferred diplomas with Latin Honors, achieving a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Distinguished Bear Creek faculty member Dr. Stephen C. Meyer, director of the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture was the keynote speaker.

Meyer has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in technical, scientific and philosophical books and journals. His technical articles and editorials have appeared in magazines and newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and more.

English teacher Shelley Kaplowitz was selected by the class to deliver the faculty address.

Seven graduates were also selected to address their classmates and guests with personal reflections and words of encouragement for the future.

The ceremony included prelude and postlude music by the upper school band, directed by Scott Higbee. The upper school choir, directed by Judy Loudenback, sang hymns and the program concluded with prayer and a benediction by Rev. Dr. Marc Mueller.

Twenty eight of Bear Creek’s Class of 2010 will attend a college or university out-of-state and 18 will attend a college or university in Washington.
