Redmond Junior High student wins piano competition

On March 13, Redmond Junior High School student Tyler Yen won the senior high school division at the Sammamish Music Club's annual Helen Crowe Snelling Memorial Awards Competition.

On March 13, Redmond Junior High School student Tyler Yen won the senior high school division at the Sammamish Music Club’s annual Helen Crowe Snelling Memorial Awards Competition.

The competition, at Pine Lake Covenant Church and organized by Sondra Hopper, featured local piano students from Redmond, Sammamish and Issaquah.

Internationally known Irene Bowling was this year’s judge.

Yen, a ninth-grader, performed “Toccata, Op. 40, no. 1” by Dimitri Kabalevsky and “Sonata in E minor, Op. 7, no. 2” by Edvard Grieg. Second place was awarded to Tom Ostrander, with third going to LinLin Xing.

In the junior division, Ethan Chau was voted as the top performer for his renditions of “Sonata in E Major, K. 380,L.23” by Domenico Scarlatti and “Andaluza” by Enrique Granados.
