Rotary International Club, Redmond Rousers, recently awarded five scholarships to graduating seniors at Eastlake High School.
The club’s chair of the Students of the Month program, Paul Prochaska, presented $1,000 to each one of the five seniors selected from the group of fourteen applicants.
As a part of the Students of the Months program, each month during the school year, two applicants make presentations to the club members during the breakfast meeting. The applicants are selected from a pool of students that can demonstrate consistent improvements in their grades while overcoming personal and family challenges in their lives. In addition, community service is recognized.
The following students received their scholarships:
• Anne Marolich, who has in the meantime been accepted to Washington State University. Marolich has been involved in Eastside HS Leadership, Junior Orthopedic Guild, Sammamish Rowing Association, and American Sign Language. She has also participated in community activities such as knitting hats for Eastside Baby Corner, serving lunches for Tent City, making scarves for Angeline’s Women Center, and volunteering at the Street of Dreams.
• Micah Monroe, who has been accepted to Western Washington University. At EHS, Monroe was a member of the varsity basketball team, and hopes to continue to play at WWU. His activities outside of the court include a 10-day mission trip to an orphanage in Bulgaria, a mission trip to Germany to help with the start of a church, as well as participating in feeding the homeless, another one of his church programs.
• Elizabeth Dunham is planning to attend Bellevue Community College and specialize in interior design. For Dunham, the activities outside of school have been limited due to her work schedule of 25 to 40 hours a week. Even with this schedule, she found time to participate in two mission trips, one to Hillsboro, Oregon and the other to Ensenada in Mexico. Her one and only hobby is the restoration of a 1990 Camaro.
• Kate Olberding is heading to University of Washington, Bothell Campus, hoping to become a dentist. At ESH, Olberding was the Senior Editor in Chief for the Year Book, and was one of the members of the prom committee. What had started for Olberding as a random involvement at local elementary schools, grew into being a school-based volunteer mentor at Lake Hills Elementary for Big Brothers Big Sisters Relay for Life.
• Binsu (Kevin) Wang plans to attend Bellevue Community College gravitating towards law and law enforcement studies. For two years running, each Saturday, Wang was a teacher’s assistant of the chess class at Lake Washington Technical College.
