Last Friday, Overlake Terrace Assisted Living and Independent Living in Redmond hosted a Shave a Thon and raised $3,412 for breast cancer research.

The event was part of a “Passionately Pink for the Cure” fundraiser by “Ann’s Hair Razors @ Overlake Terrace 2011,” a team started by David Standring, personal preferences coordinator at Overlake Terrace.

Passionately Pink is a fundraising opportunity for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a foundation dedicated to funding breast cancer research and educational programs in local communities.

This is the Shave a Thon’s third year. Standring started it after he lost his sister Ann to breast cancer in 2007 when she was 47.

Ann’s Hair Razors’ goal was to raise $2,000 with a few mini goals set at specific dollar amounts: If the team reached $1,000, Standring said he would dye his hair pink for the week leading up to the Shave a Thon; if they reached $1,500, Standring would dress as a lady and if they reached $1,800, he said he would take a “polar bear” plunge into one of the local lakes.

As the team surpassed each of these goals, Standring kept his word and walked around last week in women’s clothing with pink hair. He took his polar plunge last Friday morning at Idylwood Beach Park before the Shave a Thon. Standring said he had a fellow polar bear in Anna Kopcova, who took the plunge along with him. During the Shave a Thon, Standring and eight other volunteers — two more than the seven that were originally planned — went bald in support of breast cancer research. In addition to shaving his head, Standring also got his legs waxed. To watch a video of this event, click here.

“I would like to thank all who supported our 2011 Shave a Thon event with their encouragement, well wishes and donations,” Standring said.
