Taking the New Year’s plunge

Dozens of Redmond Police officers and residents ran into the frigid waters of Lake Sammamish New Year’s Day to help raise money for a worthy cause.

The Redmond Police Department hosted its fourth annual Polar Plunge last Friday at Idylwood Beach Park. The event is a fund-rasing effort organized by law enforcement agencies, including Redmond Police, throughout the state benefiting Special Olympics Washington. Police officers and community members collected pledges and then made the brave plunge. The Redmond Polar Plunge raised more than $10,000 – twice as much as last year, according to Jim Bove, community outreach facilitator for Redmond Police.

The the first three Redmond Polar Plunges were held in February before it was switched to New Year’s Day this time around. Bove said the Redmond Polar Plunge will be held on New Year’s Day again next year.
