Jonny Magee had a full plate of events and then some at the 2B state track and field meet last weekend at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
Triple jump, high jump, long jump — and the 4×100-meter relay.
The Bear Creek junior reached the highest echelon in one of the events by placing first in the triple jump with 45 feet.
Magee also took second in the high jump (6-2) and fourth in the long jump (20-10). Team-wise, he joined fellow relayers Brandon Saw, Blake Denniston and Jesse Leuenberger for a third-place finish in 44.67 seconds. In the relay prelims, the Grizzlies set a school record with a 44.26.
“It’s definitely kind of stressful,” Magee said of his four state events. “You gather yourself up and focus on the next one.” He added that the high-jump competitors were a relaxed group, however, and they joked around in between jumps.
Magee first competed in the long jump and the high jump on May 30, notching a personal record in the high jump despite having his sore left ankle taped up.
Next day, he tackled the triple jump and the relay. He nailed his top mark in the triple on his second jump and didn’t have to go again since no one surpassed his leap.
“It was really exciting. I trusted my run-up and my arm drives,” Magee said.
He added about the relay: “I liked running with all those seniors and we really wanted to run hard.” He noted that the guys are thrilled to have their names associated with a school record.
Magee has put in plenty of hard work over the years, including competing for club track teams in the summer and fall, and said he’s satisfied with his improvements and accomplishments. Last year, he took third at state in the triple jump and seventh in the high jump; as a freshman, he qualified for state, but didn’t place in the long jump and high jump.
Also for Bear Creek’s boys at this year’s state meet, Stan Leszynski placed sixth (10-6) in the pole vault and Alex Davisson placed 10th and 12th in the shot put (44-08.75) and discus (122-03.00), respectively.
The Grizzly boys finished seventh overall.
On the girls’ side, Bear Creek’s Holly Ray took fifth in the discus (109-07) and Bridget Daugherty placed eighth and 13th in the 400-meter run (1:05.99) and long jump (14-01.25), respectively.
In the relays, the Grizzlies’ 4×100- and 4×200-meter teams took seventh in both events. In the 4×100, Brittany DiGenova, Daugherty, Mia Nikkonen and Darrlyn McDonough ran 53.48 and in the 4×200, DiGenova, Daugherty, Nikkonen and McDonough ran 1:53.15.
