Elliott’s coaches take a trip down memory lane

Jessica Elliott’s Overlake School coaches share some of their most memorable moments of her from the 2009-10 season:

Luke Trier, volleyball:

There were two that stand out. We were having practice one day, and I usually tell the girls what to expect during practices. Our conditioning practices are really hard a lot of the time, so I said, “ladies, we’re going to be conditioning today and working super-hard,” and all of a sudden I hear this cheer, and it’s Elliott cheering because she loves the conditioning practices. The other girls looked at her like she was crazy, but you could tell that it was genuine. She was super-stoked about having to work hard, and that set the tone for the rest of the season. When you have someone that works that hard every single practice, it just drives the rest of the team. Later in the season, we were down playing Auburn, and there was a shank ball… the other team hit it off our our block on the far side of the court, but it was going out of bounds, easily 10 feet out of bounds. I thought there was no way anyone’s getting it, but Elliott was probably 15 feet away from the ball, covered all that ground in less than a second, and was able to dig the ball up. It was just pure hustle. There was no part of her that didn’t think she could get that ball. I use that example in my coaching a lot, that if you let yourself believe you can get to every ball, a lot of times you will surprise yourself.

Sara Wilcox, basketball:

I have a few, but I think that the best one was after a locker room talk that was excitingly emotional, she turned to her teammates during our kudos – a team practice of recognizing the great things that teammates do during the game that normally would go unrecognized – and said that “out of everyone, you are the only people I would want to play with.” It really spoke to the nature of this team and showed how much she cared about us as a whole. It was one of those moments that you just want to wrap up and hold on to forever.

Shawn Farmer, golf:

The most memorable Jessica Elliott moment from this season was her play at the Tri-District tournament at Fort Lewis. She started the morning out feeling incredibly sick and was not sure if she could play. But, Jessica decided to fight through it, and after a difficult front nine, she rallied on the back to shoot her lowest nine-hole score ever and make it to the state golf tournament for the third time.
