Get flexible and fit at The Bar Method

Already a sensation in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, The Bar Method has opened its first Pacific Northwest instruction studio on the upper level of Redmond Town Center, above The Mac Store.

The Bar Method is a high-intensity, no-impact workout which combines ballet conditioning — thus, the reference to the “barre” — yoga and Pilates movements to shape and elongate every major muscle group of the body and burn fat. The result is “long, firm thighs, lifted seat and flat abs,” said Bev and Luke Currier and Maika Manring, owners of the Redmond location.

Actresses Drew Barrymore, Ginnifer Goodwin, Alicia Silverstone, Kyra Sedgwick, Tori Spelling and singer Eve have endorsed The Bar Method. The regimen has been named “The Very Best Workout in Southern California” (KCAL 9, Los Angeles), “Best of the Bay” (Channel 5 Evening News, San Francisco) and “Best New Workout” (Chicago Magazine).

Of course, professional entertainers can afford to spend gobs of time and money to keep up their looks. But what can uninitiated “everyday people” expect when they walk into a class at The Bar Method?

The Curriers and Manring explained that each one-hour class includes a warmup of about 15 minutes, followed by work with weights or resistance training for another 15 minutes or so. Then you’ll work the large muscle groups such as thighs and legs, followed by “core” (abdominal) exercises.

“We strive to create a spa-like experience, an escape,” Luke noted. He added that there is “a lot of variety — you’re never gonna get the same class twice. The music is different, it’s upbeat.”

And according to Manring, “The Bar Method brings a lot of people together — it changes your body and your life. You’ll see results, have more energy, camaraderie. And you’re not in competition with others. It’s the gift you give yourself.”

Bev agreed, “You see an insecure person come in and leave with more confidence each time they come back.”

Incidentally, you don’t need dance training to participate or to achieve “a lean dancer’s body,” they said.

Neither of the Redmond trainers — Bev or Manring — had ballet experience, although they’d practiced a little yoga and Pilates before discovering and teaching The Bar Method in California.

But, “we’re all runners — this is great for cross-training, it’s really good for flexibility,” said Manring.

Typical clients are women ages 20-50, although Bev said her students have included a 72-year-old lady and a 68-year-old man.

Luke, who doesn’t teach the classes but is an avid participant, described The Bar Method as both “addictive” and “humbling.” He said it’s really improved his golf swing, and “I have never done a harder workout in my life.”

Bev chuckled, “It humbles men.”

Manring said, “It humbles everyone.”

And it improves your posture, Bev remarked.

Luke concluded, “It’s for someone who wants to see results for hard work quickly — and it’s something you can sustain for a long time, it doesn’t do damage to the body.”

Ready to take the challenge?

You can try your first class at The Bar Method free of charge, but you must call to make a reservation, to make sure there is space in the class you want. Classes are offered Monday through Saturday and open to students at any level, whether new or experienced. A new client special provides unlimited classes for a 30-day period, for $150. Training with The Bar Method, three or four times each week, for 30 days, “you will see results,” Bev stated.
