Local gymnasts shine at regionals

Four local gymnasts put together memorable performances at the Region 2 gymnastics meet in Whitefish, Montana.

The meet, held April 17-19, consisted of the best gymnasts from Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Alexa Okamura, a ninth-grader at Redmond Jr. High, won the floor event with a score of 9.6 points and finished second in the beam at 9.375 en route to a third place finish in the Junior Level 8 division with 36.925 points.

Lauren Adkins, an eighth-grader at The Bear Creek School participating in Junior 7, won two events, the vault (9.1) and floor (9.35), and finished second overall with 35.525.

Both are members of Gymnastics East, which possesses a renowned coaching staff that has helped produce numerous state, regional and national champions.

Okamura qualified for the Level 9 Western Nationals in Bartlesville, Oklahoma which will be held May 7-9.

Level 10 gymnast Madison Podlucky overcame an ankle injury during the vault warmups and came back to finish second in all-around with 37.650 points, and her younger sister Samantha finished sixth out of 33 girls in her level 8 division and won the vault event.

Madison earned a berth into the Junior Olympic National Invitational, to be held at the Showplex at Puyallup Fairgrounds May 15-17.
