Overlake’s dynamic duo place third at state tennis tournament

The Overlake School’s premiere tennis duo of senior Ed Samson and sophomore Marcus Munoz took three out of four matches to place third in the 1A/2B/1B state tennis tournament at the Yakima Tennis Club last Friday and Saturday.

Samson and Munoz opened the tournament with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Connell’s Brad Fox and Eduardo Chavez, and went on to defeat Michael Authenreith and Isaac Reister of Cascade 6-2, 6-3, earning them a spot in the state semifinals and two wins away from the state championship.

Unfortunately for Samson and Munoz, they had to take on Willie Corbit and Ben LeVeque of University Prep, the defending state champions who had given up just one game entering the semifinals.

The Owls put up a fight, but dropped the match 6-3, 6-1, and then rebounded to win a grueling match against Peter King and Alei Pors of Bush school 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 to take the third-place trophy home.

On the girls’ side, Overlake freshman Lana Robins opened her tournament with a pair of 6-1, 6-0 wins before losing 6-0, 6-4 to Maya Jansen of Freeman.

Robins easily took care of Cascade’s Leah Newell, 6-1, 6-1, to win the third-place medal.
