Redmond girls’ golf wins 70th straight league match

The Redmond High girls' golf team reached an unprecedented milestone Tuesday afternoon when they defeated Mount Si for their 70th consecutive 4A Kingco match win at Bear Creek Country Club.

The Redmond High girls’ golf team reached an unprecedented milestone Tuesday afternoon when they defeated Mount Si 243-406 for their 70th consecutive 4A Kingco match win at Bear Creek Country Club.

Junior Kelly Kennewick medaled, shooting a 47, and the Mustangs followed up with more solid scoring from Makayla Walker and sophomore Keira O’Hearn, who both shot 48s.

“I couldn’t be more prouder of our kids,” said Redmond head coach Jake Crowley on his team’s accomplishment. “This young team is starting to peak and mesh at the right time.”

The milestone victory capped off a busy time of golf for the Mustangs, as they played 36 holes over the weekend in Pasco at the Pasco Invitational, which concluded on Monday. The Mustangs placed second at the tournament, one point behind 4A powerhouse Richland.

“They got in around 11 p.m. (Monday night) and played the tough Bear Creek Country Club today on sea legs,” joked Crowley, who is in his fourth year as coach for Redmond.

But to keep the streak alive, the Mustangs will have to stay focused with a tough stretch of teams coming up, each with the goal of derailing the Mustangs’ impressive run.

“Our toughest matches are coming up next week,” Crowley said. “We have a fun team trip to Bainbridge Island this weekend and then face the gauntlet, at Skyline, Newport and Eastlake.”

The Bainbridge Island trip will be a “fun” team event held at the historic Wing Point Golf and Country Club, according to Crowley.

“We do the ‘majors’ as a team, the LPGA (Championship), British Open and the U.S. Open,” he explained. “It’s fun and competitive for our kids… and all the scores go into the players’ averages.”

For the Mustangs’ upcoming league matches, they will face a trio of extremely difficult courses where pars will come at a premium – Skyline’s Plateau Club, the Golf Club at Newcastle, and Sahalee Country Club, the site of the 2010 U.S. Senior Open.
