Redmond’s Okamura, Bear Creek’s Adkins qualify for Nationals in gymnastics

Alexa Okamura, a sophomore at Redmond High School, and Lauren Adkins, a freshman at The Bear Creek School, both shined at the gymnastics Region II Chamipionships to earn a spot to the Level 9 Western Nationals next month.

At last weekend’s regional tournament, held at Auburn Mountainview High, Okamura scored 9.4 on vault, 9.2 on bars, 9.225 on beam and 9.425 on floor for an overall score of 37.225, good enough for second place.

Okamura had been out with a stress fracture in her ankle and came back only three weeks prior to the competition.

Adkins scored 9.3 on vault, 7.475 on bars 9.3 on beam and 9.45 on floor for a fifth-place overall of 35.525.

Both girls will compete in Des Moines, Iowa starting May 1 at the national meet, and are currently coached at Gymnastics East in Bellevue.
