Redmond girls win four-team track meet: Lord breaks high jump record again

Katie Lord set a new personal-best and a new school record in the high jump Thursday as the Redmond High girls' track and field team came out victorious in the four-team 4A Kingco meet. The Mustangs won the meet with 285.5 points, beating Juanita (237.5), Lake Washington (113) and Eastlake (94).

Lord beat her old school record of 5 feet, 5 inches with a personal-best jump of 5-6.

On the track, Redmond’s Katherine Smiley won the 100 meters in 12.59 seconds. The Mustangs also got wins in the 400 and 800. Amy Pumputis won the 400 in 1:01.34 and Allie Nichols took the 800 in 2:30.10.

Redmond teammates Jenna Sanders and Devin McMahon ran toe-to-toe down the stretch in the 3,200, crushing the field and crossing the finish line together, with Sanders clocking the winning time of 12:20.27. McMahon finished in 12:20.62.

Redmond junior Alison Hix topped her personal best in the 100 hurdles for a win, her second-consecutive meet win in the event, with a time of 16.40.

The Mustang relay teams swept the field, with Bailey Whittaker, Pumputis, Darcy Hardwick and Smiley teaming up in the 400 for a winning time of 50.18 and again in the 800 in 1:46.10.

Lord along with Holly Young, Allison Amaral and Keiko Montenegro beat a tough Lake Washington team by less than a second, 4:13.02 to 4:13.99, to take the 1,600 relay.

The boys’ team did not fare as well as the girls’ squad, scoring 150 team points and finishing third behind the Eastlake Wolves, who dominated the meet with 262 points. Juanita placed second with 171.

Cole Hardwick, coming back after nursing a minor injury, won the 200 for the fifth time this season in 22.81.

The Mustangs also took both the distance races, with Miles Hille outlasting a pair of Eastlake seniors down the stretch for a win in 4:28.43. The highlight of the boys’ meet was Mack Young’s personal-best time of 9:21.20 in the grueling 3,200, which was one minute, seven seconds better than his nearest competitor.

Redmond won just one field event, the high jump, as Max Dunn finished in a three-way tie with Eastlake’s Lincoln Doyle and LW’s Filip Juric, clearing 5-4.

The Mustangs’ next meet is the 4A Kingco Championships, held at Eastlake High School on Wednesday, May 12 (prelims) and Friday, May 14 (finals), with races starting at 2:30 p.m. both days.

MUSTANGS LOSE EXTRA-INNING HEARTBREAKER

The Redmond High fastpitch team was locked into a pitcher’s duel with Skyline on Thursday night in an extra-inning game, with the Spartans pushing across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth and handing the Mustangs a tough 4-3 loss in a 4A Kingco contest.

Skyline’s Lauren Richards went the distance, fanning 12 batters while allowing three runs on four hits.

Mustang starter Emily Graves overcame control issues, and gave up only three runs on three hits through 5 2/3, keeping her team in the ball game.

Reliever Melissa White came on and struck out the side in the eighth inning, but the tiebreak runner, who started on second base, was plated in the ninth on a walk-off hit.

For the Mustangs, Riley Flynn paced the offense with a 2-for-4 night, with Ashley Mitchell, Lindsay Cristobal and Christine Ho also each collecting a hit.

The Mustangs (4-7, 7-8) play again tonight at Garfield, at 4 p.m.

MUSTANG TENNIS BEATS SAMMAMISH

On the strength of winning three of four singles matches, Redmond beat Sammamish 5-2 in a 4A Kingco tennis matchup on Thursday afternoon at Redmond High School.

Raluca Ifrin, playing at No. 2, had one of the closest sets of the year against Sammamish’s Malia Lum, winning 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-2) and finally 10-8 in the third set tiebreaker.

Michelle Solomon (6-2, 6-1) and Sophia Xu (6-1, 6-1) handily won their matches in straight sets.

In doubles action, Darien French-Owen and Jeneal Carter nearly swept Morwenna Baker and Melanie Patterson 6-1, 6-0; and Kelly Ren and Dana Simmons took a close one over Ella Kuzmenko and Chin Tung 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

OVERLAKE GIRLS ROUT AUBURN MOUNTAINVIEW

Grace Grubb scored four goals and Alison Havran netted three as The Overlake girls’ lacrosse team rolled over Auburn Mountainview 17-1 in a Division II contest Thursday at the Overlake School.

Kerri Smith also scored three times for the Owls and goalkeeper Ceci Votta saved three of four shots on goal as the Owls advanced to 9-2-0 on the year.

LEE’S 38 LEADS OWLS TO WIN

Overlake School freshman Danny Lee fired a 2-over 38 at Jefferson Park Golf Course on Thursday afternoon, leading his team to a 167-174 victory over Seattle Academy.

Behind Lee, Kevin Bush shot a 42, Reid Fredrickson carded a 43 and David Anderson rounded out the top four with a 44.

OWLS BEAT ANNIE WRIGHT AT REDMOND RIDGE

The Overlake School girls’ golf team got four solid rounds on Thursday night in a 1A Emerald City League golf match against Annie Wright, winning 66-43 using a modified Stableford scoring system.

Although Annie Wright’s Camille Priebe medaled with 23 points, Aubrey Devine and Jessica Elliott continued their solid play this season with rounds of 18, followed by Kirsten Parris with 17 and Meggie Howell with 13 for the team win.
