No vote needed: Time to dump traffic cameras

It would be great if everyone would just drive safer and the supposed need for cameras to “keep us safe” would no longer be needed, but I think those in favor of the cameras are way too optimistic and are missing the point entirely.

I have six kids, three married, five local. I was thinking that we should make a bet on who would be the first to get a traffic camera ticket. I’m glad I didn’t because it was ME.

I say that “I” got the ticket, but “I” didn’t commit the infraction (not coming to a stop behind the white line on Union Hill turning right), rather my daughter did. I am a co-owner of her car until her loan is paid off.

Points to consider:

• My rights to defend myself are seriously compromised with this camera. Who can remember two weeks ago what was happening to cause the alleged infraction? There was a calculated decision to keep the ticket amount enough to create revenue, but not enough to make it worth taking off work to go to court.

• My rights as a driving adult with years of safe driving experience are seriously compromised with the cameras. I am now so concerned about NOT getting a ticket for $124 that I don’t pay as much attention to drivers around me (deemed safe driving in the safe driver’s course I take for work).

• The population that could possibly be the most helped by cameras would be young, inexperienced drivers most of whom will be driving their parent’s cars and will NOT get the tickets. They will not experience the tension of being stopped by the police and having consequences directly affect them.  They will not experience the fines and insurance issues that DO make a difference in the way they drive.

• How many tickets were written before the cameras for not stopping behind the white line? Any??

Our constitution was written to help us make reasonable choices and enjoy freedom along with responsibility. We are letting our rights slip away in an alarming way. This newest revenue increasing (tax) is just one among many. We cannot create laws and regulations based on the premise that we are “irresponsible” people and not expect that that is exactly what we will create.

Don’t waste money putting it to a vote, DUMP THE CAMERAS.
